If you open Linear and click on "Insights," you'll see charts. They look useful. And they are, to a point.
But if you've ever tried to answer a specific question like "is our team faster or slower than 3 months ago?" using only Linear's built-in analytics, you've probably hit a wall.
Here's an honest look at what Linear gives you, and what it doesn't.
What Linear's Insights tab actually shows
Linear's Insights section includes a few views:
Issues created vs. completed over time. A simple chart showing the number of issues opened and closed per week. Useful for spotting whether you're shipping faster than new work is coming in.
Lead time and cycle time. How long issues take from creation to completion, and from start to completion. These are real engineering metrics, and it's good that Linear tracks them.
Assignee breakdown. You can filter most views by team member to see individual output.
These are legitimate starting points. For a team just getting started with metrics, this is more than enough.
Where Linear's analytics stop being useful
The problems show up when you need to answer more specific questions.
"Is our team's velocity trending up or down?"
Linear shows you how many issues closed per week, but the chart doesn't give you a clean velocity trend line across cycles. You can eyeball it, but you can't see "we're averaging 22 points per sprint and that number has been flat for 3 months."
"Who is consistently blocked?"
Linear doesn't surface tickets that have been sitting in "In Progress" for 4 days without movement. You have to go find them manually.
"Will we hit our sprint goal?"
There's no mid-sprint forecast in Linear. You can look at how many issues are done vs. remaining, but there's no projection based on current pace.
"How does this sprint compare to the last 6?"
You can look at one cycle at a time. Comparing multiple cycles side by side requires exporting data or building a spreadsheet.
"How accurate are our estimates?"
Linear doesn't track estimate accuracy over time. If your team consistently under-estimates large tickets, you won't see that pattern unless you build it yourself.
Why Linear made these trade-offs
This isn't a criticism of Linear. They've made deliberate product decisions.
Linear's core bet is that speed and simplicity win. The interface is fast, the keyboard shortcuts are everywhere, and the focus is on getting work done, not analyzing it. The analytics layer is secondary to the issue-tracking layer by design.
For most teams, that's the right call. The problem comes when you grow past a certain size and your engineering manager starts needing real answers for stakeholders, sprint retros, and hiring decisions.
What a proper analytics layer looks like for Linear teams
A good complement to Linear's built-in analytics should do a few things:
It should pull your historical cycle data and build a velocity trend across all your past sprints, per person and per team. Not just the current one.
It should detect blockers automatically. Any ticket that has been In Progress for more than 48 hours without an update should show up on a dashboard.
It should give you a mid-sprint forecast. Based on the team's current pace and remaining work, will you hit the cycle goal?
It should show estimate accuracy over time. Are your 3-point tickets actually taking 3 points of effort? This data exists in Linear. It just isn't surfaced.
